- Subsidized physical and mental health care (my old school had subsidized over the counter drugs)
- Free turkeys at Thanksgiving
- Sustainable Transportation benefits
- Subsidized public transportation passes
- Reduced price tickets to movies, attractions, and concerts
- Free concerts and theater productions
- Free campus shuttle to the beach
- Zip Cars and Zip Bikes for cheap rentals
- Free public banquet spaces

Where do you live? Our state schools offer little of that.

I live in California. I know most of the state schools here offer similar benefits. Some of them are just harder to find. But theater departments and student governance offers many of the entertainment benefits. I thought most of these (except for the turkey) were fairly standard.

What are sustainable transportation benefits? I thought maybe it was bus passes and the like, but then you listed that next....There are not even bus passes that I know of from any of our schools.....How does your subsidized housing compare to market rate? Students here save money by renting a 2-4 bedroom house on the regular market and also get much more for their money....Free childcare, personal training, and massages at the school gym? Not here: no way, no how. Is childcare also offered while parent students attend their classes?...Banquet facilities--Not free even to a campus-based organization here. You pay to rent the space and if you want food in the area, you often are forced to use the contractor the school has....The only campus shuttles I know of are the ones in an urban area where it will shuttle you to a large parking lot or to a disjoint end of campus some blocks away...."Zippo," nada, nothing, on the Zip Car and bike rentals. Er, there might be a student-to-student bike repair & maintenance service organization, but this is not offered by the school, but by the students...Turkeys????? Turkeys, you say? Oooo-kaay.

I wonder if some of those California university benefits could soon be on the chopping block. There are a lot of pressures on your state's budget.

Sustainable transportation benefits are free parking permits for walking, bussing, carpooling, etc.

Housing is about 75% of market rate or less. I'm comparing this to other "walkable" apartments.

The gym is included in tuition. The items inside the gym are cheap "student rates". I said it was subsidized. In addition spouses and domestic partners can join for cheap.

The banquet areas are free, but we do have to pay for food. I'm not sure about the catering rules.

The bike rentals are new and the cars are a contract througha company.

The turkeys are a benefit of the Associated Graduate Students for hosting a grad during Thanksgiving. The give coupons to our local grocery store.

Most of these benefits don't actually cost them anything or are wrapped up in student fees. I'm guessing the Zip Cars and bikes make them money. I think our gym is self-sustained. I just wanted those attending school to look into the benefits offered by their schools and take advantage of them. I know too many people who have 24 hour Fitness memberships at my school, and other silly expenses that the school offers for free or much less.

I wasn't meaning to argue with you. I am just surprised at the fine benefits, as they are different from what I know. I was so impressed by your post that I read it to someone else.
