Why Education Costs Rise So Fast

December 3rd, 2010 at 03:55 pm

I just read a great post about why education costs are rising quicker than inflation and should be. Mark Warschauer is a leading researcher on laptop programs in schools. His findings usually show that computers don't matter, good teaching matters. I found the article fairly convincing.

Very interesting article on a critically important subject! But I don't really buy it at first glance. I think college is a scam, but the real scam seems to be places like Phoenix University that benefit from online efficiency, but still charge normal college tuition!

And for health care, costs are definitely high for all the labor and caution required, but I think the insurance tie-in is also a big factor. Most big companies are pushing employees toward a high deductible that will definitely change employee behavior, but maybe not all in a good way as doctor visits will definitely drop, but hopefully just back to a reasonable level.

I don't know how >college< could be a scam, per se... although there are plenty of institutions that probably qualify for that distinction. There is plenty of good that comes from education, I just don't think that we manage it very efficiently in the States. The best way to lead into many careers may be to study overseas, where it is cheaper and sometimes faster! I think that Ralph is right about the insurance influence on health care.
